Training is at the core of research degree programmes at the Royal College of Art.
All research students attend the mandatory Research Methods Course (recently cited as an example of good practice by the QAAHE), which provides training in both generic and subject-specific research skills and addresses research methodologies in art and design, with particular reference to research through practice.
Each Research Group runs its own seminar series to facilitate the development of the group research culture. Examples include the History of Design Research Seminar series; the Fine Art Critical Practice Group; and the Applied Art group; and the Communications’ Critical Forum, with debates and publications.
Research student skills training is supplemented through the continuing collaboration with Imperial College and a network of other London HEIs, including AHRC collaborative research training with Goldsmiths, Kingston University and the University of Westminster.
