The School of Material, led by Dean Professor Wendy Dagworthy
OBE, pursues regeneration and development by constantly
adapting to the realities and needs of art and design for the
future. Key signatures include the scientific exploration of material,
the development and cross-fertilisation of traditional and new
technologies, and the possibility of new forms. It’s an exciting time
and place to be a student.
Within the School are the programmes of Ceramics & Glass;
Fashion Menswear; Fashion Womenswear; Goldsmithing,
Silversmithing, Metalwork & Jewellery; and Textiles. Each with an
enviable international reputation, together the five programmes
enrich the whole School. One of the markers of the success of
its programmes is the high level of employment secured by its
graduates, many of whom – as they achieve seniority in their
own careers – return to the RCA to recruit. Former students have
established their own successful businesses in all aspects of art
and design.
Across the School and College, students participate in
interdisciplinary projects and exhibitions generated by the
programmes, in particular the annual work-in-progress exhibition
and the graduate show. School of Material staff have gained
international recognition in their respective fields. Active
professionally, they bring their expert knowledge to the studio,
enhancing students’ understanding of the possibilities of their
discipline. A professional practice programme, seminars and guest
speakers from related industries support the core curriculum.
Individual students are assisted with bursaries and prizes related to
their activities as well as sponsored internships, work placements
and research projects. Student work is frequently exhibited at the
College and in prestigious museums, galleries and commercial
outlets in London and abroad.
