    Resources & Facilities

  • Students on the MA/MSc joint course have shared facilities available at both the Royal College of Art (RCA) and Imperial College London (ICL). Every student has desk space in the IDE studio at the RCA and access to workshops, seminar rooms and other teaching spaces or laboratories at ICL. Research students are enrolled at the RCA and have a studio space in the Stevens Building. Research students are not enrolled at ICL, but because the programme has good relations with that institution it is possible with agreement to connect with ICL resources.

The Darwin workshop at the RCA offers equipment for prototyping using plastics, woodwork, metalwork, welding and fabrication, paint spraying and also has a synthetic clay workshop and resin facility. Equipment includes a five-axis mill, vacuum formers and laser cutters, as well as the rapid-prototyping facilities of RapidformRCA.

At ICL, MA/MSc students have access to the IDEAS Lab – a 300sqm project build, workshop and seminar space. The workshop is managed by IDE’s Workshop Manager and includes a CNC mill, rapid-prototyping facilities, resin room and wood, plastic and composites facilities. Students who have taken the ICL induction can also use the Student Teaching Workshop, which has extensive metalwork facilities.

Within the programme space at the RCA there is colour printing, vinyl cutting, photocopying and scanning equipment, as well as meeting spaces available to all students.

By arrangement, students are also able to use workshops in other programmes, as well as some facilities outside the College.
