    Curating Contemporary Art

  • This ambitious MA course was set up in 1992 and quickly established an international reputation. Co-funded by Arts Council England and the RCA, it was the first postgraduate programme in Britain to specialise in curatorial practice as it relates to contemporary art. It is a vocational and academic course designed to provide professional preparation for those wishing to work as curators of contemporary art in both the public and private spheres. The course offers a critical examination of curatorial practice, with special emphasis on the selection and presentation of exhibitions of contemporary art, the programming of public galleries and the commissioning of art for public spaces.

From October 2009 there will be two pathways leading to the award of MA Curating Contemporary Art. The first pathway will be the existing course of academic study for students based at the RCA in London. The second pathway, the Inspire MA, will be structured as a two-year curatorial training placement for students based at one of a number of leading contemporary visual arts organisations in England, with additional teaching at the RCA. Applicants to the Inspire MA should be from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background. The academic study MA is open to all applicants regardless of ethnicity. Open Days

Curating Contemporary Art will be holding an Open Day for 2010/11 applicants on Thursday 10 December for MA students, to introduce both the College-based MA Curating Contemporary Art, and the work-based MA Curating Contemporary Art (Inspire) pathways. See Open Day Schedule for details.

Please note that the Open Day previously scheduled for December 11 has been cancelled. Anyone considering applying to do a Research degree in the department is welcome to join the Open Day on Thursday 10 instead, where they will have an opportunity to meet research supervisors, or to contact the department directly to discuss this with staff.
