The Animation Department has a commitment to broadening and deepening the understanding and practice of animation in all its forms.
The Department encourages a broad definition of animation, which includes any moving image work that is mediated on a frame by frame basis. Students are invited to develop their distinctive voices with a hands-on approach to filmmaking.
Documentary, fiction, narrative and non-narrative approaches are encouraged, and the Department selects a challenging range of artists each year to encourage cross-pollination between different, engaging means of expression.
We embrace new technologies, and our teaching and conception of
animation respects and is informed by established film and animation
skills. It is essential to develop new forms and techniques to extend
and inform ways forward for the subject area and to keep our art and
industry vital.
The Animation Department has developed a vibrant, creative environment in which to observe, study, think, produce, exhibit and reflect through research and practice. The Department delivers an exciting combination of both teaching and research, which examines the complex medium of animation.
Work by members of the Animation Department is currently viewable on the BBC film network website.
