Constructing a Space for Justice: Lawyers and Law Courts of the Early 17th Century

The practice and procedures of early 17th century law were complex. Different courts from ecclesiastical and manorial to crown and assize held diverse jurisdictions. My research looks at how contemporary images of justice could be seen to establish a design blueprint for the legal spaces and decoration. This development corresponds with the emergence of the professional lawyer, made material through mandated clothing, and institutionalised in codes governing courtroom behaviour and language.
