ADS 1: Barking Reach, Barking and Dagenham

Instant Heritage for the Thames Gateway: A Monument to Suburbia

As the world gets covered in brand new culture, heritage has become an increasingly valuable and mutable resource. Whether recalled as a knee-jerk reaction against homogenization, or invented to encourage further tourism, heritage is the new currency of globalization. Fabrication of the past, or -instant heritage- is instinctively mistrusted and frequently misused, but how can it be used to influence a place positively? The proposal is a masterplan for Barking Reach commemorating a fictional, improved version of suburbia; a large white lie as a better precedent for future development.
